B&Q Belvedere

Commercial architecture for Europe's leading home improvement retailer

An £8m new build project for B&Q Plc in North Bexley

CHQ Architects was commissioned to design this £8m new build project for B&Q Plc at Belvedere in North Bexley. It comprises 106,000 sq ft (9,820 sq m) of retail warehousing including a 20,000 sq ft Garden Centre, 30,000 sq ft Builder’s Yard and 600 customer parking spaces.

Built on a former football ground adjacent to Belvedere Station our brief was to provide a bold landmark building for our client. Conceived as a bold design with undulating roof and canopies to reflect movement in the nearby River Thames it incorporates a series of glazed pods under the canopies act a beacons for entrance and exit points from the store. To compliment this elevational articulation the warehouse itself, formed in silver cladding panels with feature aerofoil eaves, acts as a sophisticated yet simple backdrop.

The building has proved to be a great success for B&Q and their customers and was complete and open two weeks ahead of programme.
