Double award-winning retail design for Sainsbury's

This award-winning supermarket replaces an ageing factory and office unit

Built on the site of an ageing factory this complex site in Hythe, Kent is now the home of a new double award winning Sainsbury’s Supermarket designed by CHQ Partnership. Constrained by a canal, a major retaining wall, a narrowing and sloping site and within close proximity to a residential estate this was a challenging project for our design team to resolve.

The new store at Hythe opened for trading in February 2011 and has won two environmental awards;

The Guardian Sustainable Business Awards 2012 Energy Award category after developing innovative technologies to cut demand for carbon intensive peak electricity in-store.

The Energy Award was presented for the work on Hythe , which is the world's first smart grid ready supermarket. When there is higher demand for power the system activates an onsite biofuel generator, which is fuelled by waste cooking oil from Sainsbury's stores. The system also automatically manages heating, ventilation and lighting in line with the store's demands, which further significantly reduces energy use.

Gold Green Apple Award 2011 Commerce and Industry award - The Hythe ‘Smart Grid Ready Store’ for Sainsbury’s Supermarkets won the Environmental Efficiency Award in 2011. The awards, run by the Green Organisation, acknowledge and promote worldwide environmental best practice.

The Carbon Award recognises the retailer's leading work with farming suppliers to reduce their own environmental impact. Sainsbury's has developed a carbon footprinting tool which has the potential to reduce a farm's annual energy costs and carbon emissions by 10 per cent.

The supermarket comprises a 34,000 sq ft sales area and 267 car parking spaces, it replaces an ageing factory and office unit that contributed very little to the urban landscape of the town. The elevational treatment includes elements of terracotta rainscreen cladding, timber boarding and local Kentish Ragstone to provide interest to the most visible facades.
